What Is The Difference Between Marijuana-Derived CBD And Hemp-Derived CBD?

11th, Jul 2017

With so many half-truths on the web about CBD hemp oil, one of the most common questions is what is the difference between Marijuana-derived CBD and hemp-derived CBD.

True there are similarities between the products which comes as little surprise as both marijuana and hemp are derived from the Cannabis Sativa L. plant but the major difference is that hemp-derived CBD is completely non-psychoactive. Unlike specially bred, high-THC medical marijuana, hemp CBD will not cause a user to feel “high” and it is completely non-toxic yet it still offers the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes needed to produce the ‘entourage effect’.

Another major misconception about hemp-derived CBD is that it’s less effective than CBD or cannabis oil derived from medical marijuana. Whilst it’s true that the amount of CBD in hemp plants by dry weight is less than the amount of CBD derived from marijuana plants which are specially bred, once the oil is extracted from the plant, the differences in the strength of the CBD are non-detectable.

Another benefit to using hemp-derived CBD is that hemp can be cultivated much quicker than marijuana, therefore, while a specially bred, medical marijuana high CBD strain takes almost a complete season to develop, it’s possible for a hemp farmer to yield several harvests of a season, while producing a more conscious and environmentally friendly product.

Along with being completely nontoxic, hemp-derived CBD also works as a bio-accumulator, which means it can collect and absorb contaminants. Medical marijuana plants grown with fertilisers or poisonous pesticides are much more toxic and dangerous to ingest as opposed to a cleanly cultivated and extracted hemp crop.

As there are currently no minimal guidelines in place for the cultivation of medical marijuana, there is also no assurance that marijuana purchased from dispensaries or some websites is actually safe to use and recently there have been many recalls of marijuana cultivated with unapproved and dangerous pesticides.

In contrast, CBD Ultra products are derived from hemp oil which is fully traceable and certified free from herbicides, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. CBD Ultra oil is also extracted using the CO2 method, which is considered completely safe by the FDA and the cleanest extraction method possible.

Another misconception about CBD is that hemp oil derived from “industrial hemp” is dirty. There is not anything dirty about industrial hemp it’s simply a term to describe the mass cultivation of hemp for industrial uses ranging from food to fibre and building materials. As mentioned earlier though, CBD products derived from hemp using the CO2 method of extraction (such as the CBD Ultra range ) are purer and cleaner than medical marijuana products due to the method of cultivation.

These are the main differences between hemp and marijuana-derived CBD but when you consider it on a molecular level, CBD obtained from marijuana is similar to CBD obtained from hemp as in fact, CBD is CBD but it’s the effects from each that can be different.

For example, 10 mg of CBD from medical marijuana gets absorbed in the same way as 10 mg of CBD found in hemp oil and so one is not more effective than the other, they are simply used to produce different effects and both also count on external factors such as medical conditions, and individual dosage.

As a final point, for the entourage effect of CBD to be efficient it requires the complete range of cannabinoids and other compounds found in cannabis. So, like marijuana, hemp includes numerous cannabinoids and terpenes including THC and CBD in measurable amounts but the THC level in hemp oil is naturally low enough for it not to be psychoactive. Unlike products derived from medical marijuana, all CBD Ultra hemp products are completely THC free and have full traceability reports, This reason alone makes hemp a more viable and legal alternative for a number of users when compared to high-THC medical marijuana.

Conclusively, as products derived from CBD hemp oil are permissible to sell in 50 different states in the US and can also be sold legally online in Europe and the UK as food supplements, they fill a vital role for people who are unable to use medical marijuana due to health conditions and the high associated psychological risk with the product.

CBD Ultra hemp products offer an ideal substitute for those who would like to use CBD  for general health and well-being but want to avoid any potentially harmful effects associated with the psychoactive THC found in marijuana-derived products.
